National team mainstays Cristina Vergara and Margarito Angana Jr. dominated their respective weight classes in the 1st Philippines-Guam Olympic Wrestling Friendship Tournament held at the National Wrestling Gym in Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.

Vergara, a Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, topped the women’s 63-65 kg. freestyle event while Efrelyn Calitis of Pasay City and Lilian Troy of Guam settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

Angana, for his part, ruled the men’s 66 kg. freestyle category, beating silver medalist Ronil Tubog of Dumaguete City and bronze winner Jhon Rey Larena of Taytay, Rizal.

Baguio City bet Elvis Julius also made his presence felt by claiming the men’s 84 kg. freestyle gold. Michael Natividad of Philippine Army took the silver and Herbert Fukuda of Guam grabbed the bronze.

In other results, Joshua Sapinoso of California, United States and Chantay Fejeran of Guam reigned supreme in the men’s 74 kg. freestyle and women’s 72 kg. freestyle events of the tournament organized by the Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP).

“It was a good experience for both Philippines and Guam to hone their skills together, the results of which are camaraderie and a healthy international exchange of knowledge and experience between the teams,” said WAP president Albert Balde.
