Philippine athletes bag 3 golds in Ho Chi Minh track and field

The national track and field squad won three golds, four silvers and four bronzes in the International Track and Field Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City.

Benigno Marayag and former Southeast Asian Games champion Henry Dagmil led shone for the nationals as they dominated the men’s long jump event.

Marayag jumped 7.43 meters for the gold, Dagmil took the silver with 7.41m. Vietnamese Nguyen Van Hue settled for bronze with 7.40m.

Veteran Eliezer Sunang ruled the men’s shot put with a 16.10-meter heave to outclass Vietnam’s Tran Minh Tuan (14.55m) and Tran Phu Hoang Long (13.70m).


Riezel Buenaventura took the team’s third gold by winning the women’s pole vault with a 3.70m showing, beating silver medalist Truong Thi Thu of Vietnam (3.40m) and Chuan Yu Tian of Malaysia (3.20m).

The team’s other silver medals were from Danilo Fresnido in the men’s javelin (66.11m), Katherine Kay Santos in the women’s long jump (5.88m) and Laos SEA Games gold medalist Rosie Villarito in the women’s javelin (48.11m).

The bronzes were delivered by Evalyn Palabrica (women’s javelin, 42.86m), Jordan Paul Billones (men’s 800m run, 1:52.92), Christopher Ulboc (men’s 3,000m, 9:29.8) and Ernest John Obiena (men’s pole vault, 4.70m).
