Philippines battles Qatar for Final Four slot


The Philippines will be gunning for a spot in the semifinals when it faces Qatar in the quarterfinals of the 15th Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship on Monday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The Philippines-Qatar match is scheduled at 4 p.m.

The Power Pinoys made it to the knockout stage after finishing second in Pool A with a 1-1 card behind group topnotcher Iraq (2-0).

Qatar, on the other hand, swept all its four assignments in Pool C for a clean 4-0 mark.

“We need to play aggressive game against Qatar. They’re a strong team but we have chances against them. We just need to be consistent with our offense and defense both on floor and net,” said Power Pinoys head coach Francis Vicente.

The Philippines will be banking on its Australian reinforcements Cedric Legrand, an open hitter, and William Lewis, a setter.

Locals Alnakran Abdilla, Peter Den Mar Torres, Jayson Ramos and John Paul Torres must also contribute in scoring.

Seeing action in the opening game at 12 noon are South Gas Sports Club-Iraq and Kondensat Zhaikmunay-Kazakhstan followed by the tussle between defending champion Iran and Taiwan at 2 p.m.

Playing at the Cuneta Astrodome are China and Lebanon at 6 p.m.
