THE No. 44 Philippine men’s squad started its campaign on a bright note in the 41st World Chess Olympiad by beating Afghanistan, 3.5-.5, on Saturday in Tromso, Norway. Grandmasters Julio Catalino Sadorra, John Paul Gomez and Eugene Torre defeated FIDE Masters Mahbuboollah Kooshani, Zaherudden Asefi and Hamidullah Saraery, respectively. International Master Paulo Bersamina elicited a draw from Zabiullah Ahmadi to seal the country’s first win.
