The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) announced that it would request an additional P2 million to support the international campaign of Alberto Lim Jr. that includes the Wimbledon and US Open this year.
“We are requesting to PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) if they can give us additional fund to support our young achiever achieve his dream,” said PHILTA Secretary-General Romeo Magat in an interview on Thursday.
Lim is currently competing in the Roland Garros Junior French Championships.
“After this French Open [campaign], Lim will head to London for another tournament before the Wimbledon,” added Magat.
The 17-year old Lim is the country’s current top seeded junior player after becoming the youngest champion in the Philippine Columbian Association Open, where he dethroned Patrick John Tierro, 6-5, 7-6 (7-5), in September 2015. Lim is currently No. 23 in junior tennis world rankings.
He is also one of the four Filipino athletes granted scholarship by the International Olympic Committee Solidarity Movement. He receives a monthly allowance of $500.
After the French Open, Lim will test his mettle in the Nike Junior International Championship from June 26 to July 1 in London before competing in the Wimbledon in July.
