The Philippines split its first two assignments to stay in the middle of Group B of the International Federation of Basketball Associations (FIBA) 3×3 World Cup 2017 early Monday morning (Manila time) in Nantes, France.
Composed of prodigies Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng and veteran JR Quiñahan, the delegation pulled off a 21-15 stunner over Romania in its debut game before suffering an 11-22 setback to host France in its second match.
Ravena and Paras joined forces to spark a run in the last three minutes en route to an upset against seventh seed Romania.
Unfazed by a 12-13 deficit, Paras went for a sensational drive to the hoop then Ravena completed an and-one notching a two-point basket for a 17-13 lead.
Paras, who was later named Player of the Day, took the game away from the Romanians’ reach as he exploded for a 4-0 closing run with 30 seconds remaining on the clock.
However, the Filipino side lost to a Charles Bronchard-led France, which eventually topped the five-team pool in the early goings.
The Philippines will aim for a bounce-back win against second seed Slovenia at 1:40 a.m. and will end its elimination round campaign against fifteenth seed El Salvador at 3 a.m. on Tuesday (Manila time).
