The Philippines’ Denver Cuello will challenge World Boxing Council (WBC) minimum weight champion Xiong Zhao Zhong of China on June 28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
“He [Cuello] is ready to face Zhong anytime and anywhere,” Cuello’s manager Aljoe Jaro told The Manila Times in a phone interview. “I’m very confident of Cuello’s chances. He trains and works a lot for this title fight.”
Cuello (33 wins, four losses and six draws with 21 knockouts) said he is glad of the title shot and the chance to be included in the ranks of Filipino world boxing champions.
“I waited for so long and I’m happy the opportunity is here already. Xiong is a champion so I have to fight hard. I’m sure he won’t back down,” Cuello told boxing website RingTV.com.
Xiong (20-4-1 win-loss-draw card with 11 KOs), a known counter-puncher, won two fights via unanimous decision versus two Mexicans last year. The first was over Javier Martinez Resendiz and the second against Osvaldo Razon.
