Doha Asian Games gold medalist Antonio Gabica and Carlo Biado reached the semifinals of the World 9-Ball Championships being held at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.
Gabica barged into the Final Four stage after surviving Nick Van den Berg of Netherlands in the quarterfinals (11-10), Ko Pin Yi of Taiwan (11-9) in the Last 16 and Oliver Ortmann of Germany (11-8) in the Last 32.
“This is a big win for me, for the Philippines and for Qatar.
I hope I can continue to win [in the semifinals],” said Gabica. Biado also made some waves by whipping Chris Melling of Great Britain (11-3) in the quarterfinals, Fabio Petroni of Italy (11-10) in the Last 16, and American Shane Van Boening (11-10) in the Last 32.
“I’m surprised at that match [versus Melling]. There was no pressure. There was pressure with Shane and Petroni, but here I just felt very confident. I can’t believe it. This is really amazing,” said Biado.
In the semifinals, Gabica takes on Karl Boyes of Great Britain, who defeated Nick
Ekonomopoulos of Greece, 11-8, while Biado battles Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, an 11-7 winner over Filipino Jeff de Luna.
Lee Van Corteza, Dennis Orcollo, Israel Rota, Ramil Gallego and Marlon Manalo, however, lost in their respective matches in the tournament sanctioned by the World
Corteza ousted Daryl Peach of Great Britain (11-4) in the Last 32 before bowing to Ekonomopoulos (9-11) in the Last 16 while Orcollo beat John Morra of Canada (11-6) in the Last 32 but succumbed to Hohmann (8-11) in the Last 16.
Rota (lost to Lo Li Wen of Taiwan, 2-11), Gallego (lost to Chris Melling of Great Britain, 7-11), and Manalo (lost to Petroni, 7-11) were booted out in their respective Last 32 matches.
The semifinals and finals were scheduled on Friday night.
