Promising Filipina weightlifter Ellen Rose Perez won two bronze medals in the 2017 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship held at the Army Physical Training and Sports Center in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Perez, a silver medalist in the 2017 Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Championships in July, lifted 73 kilograms to claim the third-place honors in snatch of the junior women’s 53-kg. division of the event sanctioned by the International Weightlifting Federation.
The Tagbilaran City pride continued to impress the field as she cleared 95 kilograms in the clean and jerk; good enough to earn another bronze for the Philippines in the tournament participated by more than 20 countries from the Asian region.
The other members of the team were John Fabuar Ceniza, John Paolo Rivera Jr. and Eireen Ann Ando, who all failed to make it to the podium in their respective weight classes.
Ceniza placed fifth in the junior men’s 56-kg. event after scoring 100 kgs. in snatch and 130 kgs. in clean and jerk for a total of 230 kgs. while Rivera also finished fifth in the youth men’s 50-kg. category following his 88-kg. showing in snatch and 110-kg. output in clean and jerk for a total of 198 kgs.
Ando finished eighth in the junior women’s 63-kg. class with a total of 180 kgs. (80 kgs in snatch and 100 kgs. in clean and jerk).
The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam were the other Southeast Asian countries that won medals in the Asian meet.
Thailand pocketed 13 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze medals while Vietnam got four gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze medals. Singapore and Myanmar were not able to win a single medal.
