Philippine Long Distance Co. (PLDT) has inked a joint venture with US firm Phunware in a bid to exclusively distribute the latter’s mobile marketing solutions in Southeast Asia.
The venture, which involves a $10 million investment via PLDT Capital, is expected to benefit PLDT subsidiary ePLDT.
The telco said Phunware’s Multiscreen as a Service (MaaS) platform would allow
companies to engage seamlessly with customers through mobile devices, from location-based marketing and advertising to content management, notifications and analytics to navigation.
“Filipino and Asean consumers are among the most engaged users of mobile and digital services in the world,” noted Winston Damarillo, managing director of PLDT Capital and chief strategy officer of PLDT.
“We see mobile phones as an essential part of our daily lives and expect new experiences to pique our digital curiosity,” he added.
Phunware Chairman Alan Knitowski, meanwhile, said: “With more than 70 million subscribers, PLDT instantly provides a large base of audiences and communities that will enjoy new and unprecedented levels of real-time engagement both indoors and outdoors across their favorite brands and venues.”
Eric Alberto, ePLDT chief executive, said the joint venture would provide an edge for companies that do business in retail, travel, hospitality and real estate.
ePLDT-Phunware services are set to launch in 90 days, the telco said.
PLDT said Phunware currently supports over 500 million monthly unique users globally. Its customers include CBS Interactive, NBC Sports, Dignity Health, GameStop and Mandarin Oriental.
