The Philippine Women’s National Football Team will be competing in the ninth edition of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship group stage in Mandalay, Myanmar starting July 26.
The Philippine team, ranked 72nd in the world and 16th in Asia, is set to play in Group A with three other squads in the eight-team women’s regional football championship.
The Philippines were drawn with Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore while the other group has Myanmar, Australia, Timor Leste and Malaysia.
After a three-day tryout session facilitated by head coach Leticia Bautista in early June, 30 players were selected to be part of the training pool. The training camp started June 26.
From the pool that includes veterans and newcomers, a final roster of players will be made.
The Philippines will face tough opposition in their initial games in the group phase, as they will be up against defending champions Thailand in the opening day.
The Filipinas will be playing against the Vietnamese at the Mandalarthiri Stadium on July 28 before battling Singapore in their last game in the preliminary round.
In last year’s competition, the Philippines bowed out of contention in Group B with just a win and two losses.
The Filipinas started the 2015 AFF Championship on a high note after winning against Malaysia, 3-0, through a brace performance by Joana Houplin and a goal by Jesse Shugg.
However, the Philippines suffered two-straight lopsided defeats against Myanmar, 4-1, and last year’s hosts Vietnam, 4-0, in their final games in the tourney.
