Female jiu-jitsu fighters Annie Ramirez and Maybelline Masuda delivered the country’s first two gold medals in the 2014 Asian Beach Games being held in Phuket, Thailand. The 23-year-old Ramirez outclassed Onanong Saengsirichok of Thailand in the finals, 99.0-0, to bag the women’s -60-kilogram crown. She defeated Nguyen Thi of Vietnam in the quartefinals (99.0-2) and Rushana Nurjanova of Turkmenistan in the semifinals (12.0-0). Ramirez shared the spot light with Masuda, who also scored an impressive 15.0-0 win over Le Thu Trang Dao of Vietnam to rule the women’s -50-kg. category. The 25-year-old Masuda made it to the finals by ousting Ha Anh Thu of Vietnam in the quarterfinals (99.0-0) and Tatchapan Srisamer of Thailand in the semifinals (18.0-8). Overall, the Philippines has two golds and one bronze to move into the fifth place position. The team has already surpassed its two-silver, two-bronze showing in the 2012 edition held in China.
