Pinay masters remain unbeaten in Asean tilt


Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Janelle Mae Frayna and Jan Jodilyn Fronda remain undefeated after two rounds to share the top spot in the girls’ 20-under of the Asean Age-Group Chess Championships being held at the Cotai Sands Conference Centre in Macau, China.

Frayna outclassed fellow WFMs Bibissara Assaubayeva of Kazkahstan in the first round and Nguyen Thi Thuy Trien of Vietnam in the second round while Fronda whipped Nguyen Truong Bao Tran of Vietnam and Tan Li Ting of Malaysia in her first two games.

Frayna and Fronda will be disputing the lead when they face each in the third round.

In the boys’ 18-under category, Vince Angelo Medina is in a four-way tie on top with Vietnamese FIDE Master Che Quos Huu and International Master Tran Tuan Minh, and Nurlanov Zhakshylyk of Kyrgyzstan, with two points each.

Medina defeated Liew Ken Yew of Malaysia in the opening round then clobbered compatriot Giovanni Mejia in the next round.

In the boys’ 20-under, Paulo Bersamina dropped to second spot after settling for a draw with Liu Xiangyi of Singapore in the second round. He beat Nguyen Phuoc Tam of Vietnam in the first round.

Bersamina has 1.5 points behind leader Nguyen Thi Mai Hung of Vietnam who has two points.
