FILIPINA boxer Nesthy Petecio of Davao del Sur crushed Maryna Malovana of Ukraine to secure her third victory in the 2014 AIBA World Women’s Championship at the Halla Gymnasium in Jeju City, South Korea.
The feisty 22-year old Petecio, the only Filipina left in contention in the ongoing tournament, won in all three judges’ scorecards 40-36 after four rounds. She needs to win against lanky Lu Qiong of China in the next fight to be able to advance into the medal rounds. A boxer has to win at least six bouts to win the gold in the featherweight category.
Her other victims were Lianna Strandell of Sweden and Manel Meharzi of Algeria, both by unanimous decisions.
Two other Filipina pugs Josie Gabuco and Irish Magno already bowed out of contention in the tourney participated in by 280 boxers from 67 countries.
