The Philippines notched its second straight win after rallying past Uzbekistan, 62-55, on Monday in the FIBA Asia Women’s Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.
Team captain and senior starter Joan Grajales scored 13 points to lead the Philippines, including three three-pointers, while former Adamson standouts Merencia Arayi and Analyn Almazan finished with 11 and 10 points.
The Filipinas relied on a good start to lead by as much as 16 points lead and end the first half ahead, 37-25. Uzbekistan came out firing and held the Philippines scoreless in the first six minutes of the third quarter to close the gap going into the fourth
The Philippines went on a 10-0 run capped by Melissa Jacob’s trey to pull away from a 51-all tie and regain a 10-point advantage, 61-51, entering the last-minute mark.
Forward Chovi Borja scored another three-pointer and Arayi capped the run with a lay-up before Grajales split her free throws to seal the win.
The Philippines routed Hong Kong, 87-57, in its opening game Sunday, and will face host Thailand on Tuesday.
