“Despite my earlier pronouncement not to join and give others a chance to play for the country, the Purefoods management has asked me to reconsider my decision,” Pingris said in a statement.

“I talked to my wife and we agreed. In the end, it was pride and honor in representing the Philippines that prevailed over me. I am grateful for management’s support and if the Philippine team still needs me, I promise to go all out for the country in the FIBA Asia Championship as it aims to gain a slot in the Rio Olympics next year,’ he added.

Gilas Pilipinas is currently in Estonia for a pocket tournament until August 22.

Gilas Pilipinas headed by naturalized player Andray Blatche will take on Netherlands on Thursday for its first game in the tournament.

The Netherlands basketball team, known as the Orange Lions, is competing in the Euro Basketball League in Europe.

Joining Blatche in the team are Jayson Castro, Ranidel De Ocampo, Gabe Norwood, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Asi Taulava, Terrence Romeo, Aldrech Ramos, Gary David, JC Intal, Sonny Thoss, Dondon Hontiveros, Calvin Abueva, Jimmy Alapag, Troy Rosario and Moala Tautuaa.

San Miguel Corporation players LA Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra and June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel Beer decided to skip this year’s national team because of different reasons.

Boycott all SMC products and teams. That is the only principled response to SMC’s unpatriotic act of preventing its players to join the national team.
