The Philippines copped six gold medals in table tennis of the 1st Asia Pacific University Games (APUG) held in Cebu City.
University of Cebu standouts Dannel Jay Tormis (men’s singles) and Diana Oliverio (women’s singles) led the country’s impressive showing as they bagged gold medals in their respective categories.
Also winning gold medals were the men’s team, women’s team, men’s doubles and mixed doubles bets to claim the overall title in the event organized by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines.
Universiti Teknologi Mara (UTM)-Malaysia prevented a sweep for the host country by grabbing the women’s doubles gold medal.
In badminton, the Filipino shuttlers settled for four silvers and seven bronzes as powerhouse UTM-Malaysia completed a clean five-gold exploits.
The Malaysians ruled the men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and team event.
John Michael Guibranza (men’s singles), Hannah Alyssa Guibranza and Jomarie Alterado (women’s doubles), Dexter Opalla and Aijun Penute (men’s doubles), and the Philippines-1 (team event) delivered the silver medals for the Philippines.
The bronzes were from Shemae Grace Cabaluna and Jenny Rose Ramirez (women’s doubles); Scott Weel Busario and Gideon John Obsemares, and Benny Pelito and Christian Paul Cayna (men’s doubles); Jenny Rose Ramirez and Shemae Grace Cabaluna (women’s singles); Christian Paul Cayna (men’s singles); and the Philippines-2 (team event).
