Pinoy champ to defend kata crown


Filipino karateka Orencio James De Los Santos will defend his title in the 3rd International Shotokan Karate Federation World Shoto Cup today in Cape Town, South Africa.

The 2012 Male Kata Individual champion, De Los Santos will pit his skills against 68 competitors from different parts of the world.

“I have prepared enough physically. Now it’s all in the mind. I’m ready,” he said on Saturday.

A two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, De Los Santos said he trained daily for conditioning and refinement of his execution of kata (form), “I train my katas everyday to really prepare me for this big competition. When it comes to my mental preparation, I think I am more confident but not overboard.”

Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) Secretary General Raymund Lee Reyes said they are happy De Los Santos won a silver medal in the 2016 Vietnam Open Karatedo Championship in May. The PKF is the national sports association of karate in the country.

Reyes said he hopes De Los Santos would retain his title.

The International Shotokan Karate Federation promotes traditional Japanese karate around the world.
