Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) Team La Salle won six gold, 11 silver and eight bronze medals in the 10th Korea Open International Karatedo Championships on Sunday in Gyeonggi, South Korea.
Heather Urielle Liwanes (Under-11 class), Karl Corvin Mayugba (U7) and Francis Joshua Cuarton (U11) bagged the gold medals in their respective individual kata [form]events.
Julio Gabriel Lacson (12-13), Kyro Charlz Mayugba (10-11), Nathan Tyrel Lim (10-11), Thomas Jared Lim (10-11), Sebastian Lacson (8-9), and Liwanes (8-9) won silver medals in individual kata.
Cuarton (10-11) and Liwanes’ sister, Heath Ulrich Liwanes (8-9), meanwhile, won silver medals in the individual kumite [sparring].
Patrick Gregory Tecson, Kyro Mayugba, Sebastian Lorenzo Lacson and Karl Mayugba finished third in the individual kumite event while Michael Joseph Farmer, Brian Albert De Jesus, Heath Ulrich Liwanes also bagged bronze medals in individual kata.
“We are happy in the federation that our athletes are excelling in international competitions such as the Korea Open,” said PKF Secretary-General Raymund Lee Reyes on Monday.
The La Salle karate team is a member of the PKF-National Sports Association whose clubs are actively participating in various national meets.
“They are one of the groups who regularly attend PKF championships. And now, we can see how they performed well in the international scene,” added Reyes.
Twelve countries participated in the event including host South Korea, Kazakhstan, Russia, India, Senegal, Hong Kong, Thailand, Nepal, Japan, Sri Lanka and Mongolia.
