London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga scored a convincing unanimous victory in his debut game in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) held at the Palasport A. Mura Porto Torres in Italy.
Barriga, representing Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder, got the nod of all three judges (50-45, 50-44, 50-41) against Leandro Blanc of Argentina Condors in the light flyweight division (46-49-kg.).
The Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder squad dominated the Argentina Condors, 4-1, in their best-of-five series. The other members of the Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder who also won in their respective weight-classes are Renato De Donato of Italy (light welterweight), Michel Maurice Tavares of France (middleweight) and Imre Szello of Hungary (heavyweight). Bantamweight Michele Crudetti of Italy was the lone casualty in the team.
The Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder and Argentina Condors are in Group A along with the United States of America Boxing Team Knockouts, Ukraine Otamans, Desert Hawks Algeria and German Franchise.
Up next for the Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder are the Desert Hawks Algeria scheduled on February 1 at the Bergamo Centro Sportivo Italcementi also in Italy.
The tournament serves as Barriga’s build up for the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea slated on September 18 to October 4.
“I would like to thank my ABAP [Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines] family for their support and of course my family and my coaches for their guidance,” said Barriga, a gold medalist in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.
The WSB is a tournament organized by the International Boxing Association—the world governing body of boxing. It is a professional international boxing event.
National mainstay Charly Suarez also played for Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder in 2013.
