Pinoys to clash against Russians in 1st Philippine International chess today


RUSSIAN Grandmasters Ivan Popov and Anton Demchenko are expected to dominate the 1st Philippine International Chess Championship set to start today at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City. Povov with an ELO rating of 2622 and Demchenko, 2596, are the highest rated players in the tough field of 15 GMs, eight are foreign, who will be aiming for the lion’s share of the $30,000 cash purse. Expected to oppose them are Filipino GMs Oliver Barbosa (2533), John Paul Gomez (2510) and Rogelio Antonio Jr. (2503). Also expected to grab the limelight are Darwin Laylo (2500), Mark Paragua (2484), Rogelio Barcenilla (2455), Eugene Torre (2448) and Richard Bitoon (2413).
