• Pirates shock defending champs Red Lions

Reymark Caduyac starred in the closing minutes as Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) stunned San Beda College (SBC), 96-91, to seize the solo lead in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 93 basketball tournament on Friday at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan City.

Caduyac sank back-to-back baskets with under two minutes left to give Lyceum a five-point lead as the Pirates climbed to 2-0 and scored their first win against the Red Lions since 2013.

“He (Caduyac) just bailed us out. Solid performance from him,” said LPU head coach Topex Robinson, who also lauded the overall effort of his team.

Caduyac scattered 16 points and CJ Perez topscored with 24 markers while Cameroonian big man Mike Nzeusseu chipped in a double-double of 18 markers and 13 boards for Lyceum.

Robert Bolick tallied 21 points while transferee Clint Doliguez contributed 19 markers as the Lions dropped to 1-1 and saw their 12-game winning streak from the preseason snapped.

The Pirates mounted a 34-23 lead early in the second period but the Lions unloaded five triples to close within four, 46-50, at the end of the first half.

Lyceum and San Beda figured in a tight battle in the fourth quarter, which saw four deadlocks and three lead changes.

But Caduyac sparked a 6-0 run as the Pirates pulled away from an 89-89 tie and limited the Lions to just two points in the final minutes.

In the other games, Teytey Teodoro powered Jose Rizal University to a 68-54 domination of University of Perpetual Help System Dalta even as Emilio Aguinaldo College mauled College of St. Benilde, 74-64.

Teodoro sizzled with 26 points and seven rebounds while Abdel Poutouochi added 13 markers for the Heavy Bombers, who bounced back from a 75-96 defeat to Lyceum in their season opener and improved to 1-1.

Genmar Ylagan and Prince Eze notched 12 points apiece as the Altas dropped to 0-2 following the forfeiture of their first game against St. Benilde.

The Generals leaned on returning big man Hamadou Laminou’s 21-point, 13-rebound performance en route to their first win in the season.

Clement Leutcheu had nine points and eight boards for the Blazers, who only shot 20-of-80 from the field and committed 27 turnovers.
