The Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates thrashed the Mapua Institute of Techno-logy Cardinals, 74-59, on Saturday in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
Sophomore Dexter Zamora scored nine points in the pivotal period to lead the Pirates into their second win in three matches.
It was a remarkable performance for the Pirates that finished 10th in the last NCAA season. Lyceum is now sharing the second spot with the San Beda Red Lions that are also bearing a 2-1 slate.
In the juniors division, the Jose Rizal Light Bombers trounced the Letran Squires, 67-61, to remain unbeaten in three matches, while the Mapua Red Robins, after two defeats, entered into the winners’ column by nipping the Lyceum Junior Pirates, 91-58.
