PLDT eyes solo V-L lead vs Coast Guard

Chalk up another win for PLDT Home Ultera, which faces winless Coast Guard today (Tuesday) while Army tries to get back on track against Navy in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Ultra Fast Spikers pulled off a straight-set win over the defending champion Lady Troopers in a duel of fancied teams last Sunday and have been installed as the heavy favorites to prevail over the Lady Dolphins in the 4 p.m. clash.

Another win will net PLDT the solo lead at 3-0, leaving erstwhile co-leaders Cagayan Valley and Meralco while a third straight loss will dampen Coast Guard’s semifinal bid in the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s and presented by PLDT Home Ultera with Mikasa and Accel as backers.

PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb is expected to rest his starters like Alyssa Valdez, Suzanne Roces and Jaja Santiago although his bench looks formidable enough to topple Coast Guard, which has dropped its first two games to Navy and Fourbees-Perpetual.

Army, on the other hand, goes all-out against Navy in a bid to rebound from its stinging loss to PLDT and resume its quest for one of the semifinal berths in the single round robin elims of the season-opening conference of the league where it all started.

Former league MVP Jovelyn Gonzaga remains a doubtful starter after sitting out the Army-PLDT match with a right ankle injury but the Lady Troopers are fancied to get past the Lady Sailors, who swept their Coast Guard counterparts but took a 0-3 beating from the Meralco Power Spikers.

Meanwhile, the Meralco-Baguio match on Sunday will be shown over GMA News TV Channel 11 starting at 1 p.m. today while the Army-Navy clash and the PLDT-Coast Guard face-off will be telecast on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, according to the organizing Sports Vision.
