PHILIPPINE Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) said it is well positioned to meet an expected surge in subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service in the country amid a rapidly growing global market for digital subscription thanks to its partnership with internet TV service provider iflix.
A recent report on Global OTT TV & Video Forecasts from Digital TV Research said that the number of homes globally with SVOD subscriptions was expected to rise by 485 percent from 20 million in 2010 to about 120 million by end-2015. By 2020, the total number is expected to reach 250 million, up over 1,000 percent from 2010.
Napoleon L. Nazareno, PLDT and Smart president and CEO, explained that consumer viewing habits “are going through a major shift towards online video, including video on demand,” and that PLDT Group’s recent partnership with iFlix “places us in an excellent position to meet that demand through a very affordable, high quality video-on-demand subscription service.”
PLDT and its mobile subsidiary Smart Communications recently partnered with iflix to provide SVOD services the country.
“The Philippines is moving in line with global trends. With iflix, PLDT and Smart can offer the widest library of video content to more Filipino homes when and where they want it,” PLDT executive vice president and group head of consumer business Ariel Fermin said.
“Our subscribers can access and enjoy more than 11,000 hours of TV and movie entertainment from the best content providers around the world,” he added.
PLDT said the video content can be viewed at home or on the move–using their TV screens, desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones at very affordable monthly rates that start at P99 per month. It is offered exclusively to PLDT HOME and Smart subscribers nationwide.
Patrick Grove, iflix chairman, noted that with over 75 million Filipinos communicating and being entertained using the PLDT Group services, “PLDT is the perfect partner for iflix in the Philippines.”
PLDT’s partnership with iflix is the first among a series of such service launches in the region. Earlier, PLDT had invested $15 million in iflix, adding to the pool of funds that is enabling iflix to acquire rights to new content, produce original programming, and offer them to customers in Southeast Asia.
iflix has formed landmark deals with Hollywood’s top studios, including The Walt Disney Company, Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution (Fox) and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, among others.
With about 100,000 kilometers of fiber transmission and distribution assets, PLDT and Smart can deliver rich multimedia content through the combined reach of its extensive fixed and mobile networks.
The company said that existing subscribers of PLDT HOME DSL and PLDT HOME Ultera can experience iflix as an add-on option on top of their monthly fees, for only P99 per month, while Fibr Plan customers can enjoy iflix for free as part of their subscription.
HOME customers who will upgrade to a TVolution or Telpad plan will have unlimited access to iflix at no additional fee.
Smart subscribers, meanwhile, will be able to enjoy rich entertainment on the go also for P99 a month, charged to their prepaid loads or on top of their postpaid accounts.
