Philippine Long Distance Tele-phone Co. (PLDT) will complete the roll out of its third-generation (3G) network all over the country by the third quarter of 2014.
“Not yet [complete]. By the middle or third quarter next year. We’re doing 75 percent to 80 percent by first quarter next year,” said Napoleon Nazareno, president and chief executive officer of PLDT and Smart Communication Inc.
The company said that the 3G network-boosting program is intended to enhance customer experience through faster browsing speeds and more extensive 3G coverage.
The 3G telecommunications technology refers to standards for mobile phone services that comply with the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications by the International Telecommunication Union. A 3G mobile network can be connected to most of mobile phone with a great range of advanced services.
Meanwhile, a 3G mobile phone allows subscribers to take advantage of the application in wireless as video calling, music downloading and 3G mobile Internet access, mobile TV and video calls.
Earlier, the company said that more of its subscribers are shifting to smartphones and that the company is further expanding its 3G network coverage in Mindanao.
It added that the move is a vital part of the company’s nationwide network expansion.
“By third [quarter of 2014]I think we will hit that 100-percent 3G covering,” Nazareno said.
