PNoy appoints new deputy ombudsman for Mindanao

President Benigno Aquino 3rd has appointed a former Ateneo de Davao professor as the new deputy ombudsman for Mindanao.

Rodolfo Elman, a Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) topnotcher, was handpicked by the president for the position.

Elman served as assistant ombudsman before he was appointed to the highest anti-graft post in Mindanao. He was a noted academician before entering the Office of the Ombudsman when he was appointed by then Ombudsman Ma. Merceditas Navarro-Gutierrez. During his stint there, Elman was known for his integrity and honesty.

In the JBC voting, five names were shortlisted for the position vacated by Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao Humphrey Monteroso. Elman notched the highest vote with five votes from the members of the council.

Also included in the shortlist were lawyer Rowena Apao-Adlawan, Ombudsman Director Maria Iluminada Lapid-Viva, Romeo Alcantara, and Melinda Alconcel-Dayanghirang.

Currently, another vacant position was opened by the JBC following the retirement of Deputy Ombudsman for the Military Emilio Gonzalez 3rd.

The Supreme Court ordered the reinstatement of Gonzalez who was dismissed from the service by the Office of the President for the delayed disposition of the case of Sr. Insp. Rolando Mendoza that resulted in the bloody hostage-taking incident in Luneta Park on August 23, 2010.
