At the height of the typhoon season, the Spring finally arrived in the Philippines. Like a bolt from the sky, the outrage at the plunder of the people’s money through the pork barrel system surprised everyone including the administration of President Benigno Aquino III. For the first time, PNoy faces a formidable protagonist which ironically is challenging him on his anti-corruption rhetoric.

With the success of the Million People March and with protests still accumulating momentum, it behooves PNoy to heed the resounding cry of his Bosses—Abolish not reform the pork barrel. Reforming or renaming the Priority Development Assistance Fund will not placate the anger of citizens angered at the wanton theft of the people’s tax money. Protests are now spreading at the grassroots level with noise barrages at schools and parishes, all demanding the abolition of the pork barrel.
