The police and the military are hunting down six armed men who abducted the mayor of the municipality of Naga in Zamboanga Sibugay on Monday night.
Maj. Gen. Gerry Barientos, commander of the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division, on Tuesday said members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are looking for the abductors of Mayor Gemma Adana.
Adana was kidnapped inside her house in Taytay Manubo Village in Zamboanga Sibugay around 9:15 p.m. on Monday.
It had been reported that Adana was with her friends when the armed men wearing masks and camouflage uniforms grabbed her.
She was then taken to a waiting pump boat that headed toward Mamagon area in Naga.
It was not immediately known why the police failed to detect the daring assault or if the mayor had no bodyguards at the time of the attack.
“Kinuha lang siya, then sinakay sa pump boat, nilayo sa area, nung malaman ng tropa natin ito, immediately nag-react tayo, unfortunately hindi natin nakita itong grupo na ito [She was kidnapped and then taken away from the area in a pump boat. We reacted right away but unfortunately we have no sighting of them yet],” Barientos said.
It was not immediately known what group abducted Adana but Barientos said lawless elements might have contacts with the Abu Sayyaf Group in Basilan and Sulu.
“[There is a possibility that the group that had taken the mayor has contacts with the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan because their modus operandi is that they would kidnap somebody here, and then take the victim somewhere else],” he added.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the police and the military are yet to receive information that the kidnappers have contacted the mayor’s family.
