PNP finally scores against carnappers in Legazpi

LEGAZPI CITY: The Philippine National Police (PNP) finally scored in the war against carnappers in Bicol with the arrest Sunday of two suspected motorcycles thieves, including a former Legazpi barangay councilor.

A police report said Dindo Altarejos Fuentes of Binanuahan, Legazpi was arrested at 8:20 p.m. on Sunday at nearby Daraga town while about to flee with a stolen motorcycle.

During interrogation, Fuentes identified his partner as Janlen Llagas Azuran, a former barangay councilor of Imperial Court, Barangay 23 in Legazpi. Fuentes was found in possession of 16 keys for various motorcycles without any supporting documents.

Together with Legazpi PNP members, authorities nabbed Azuran on the same day at his residence in Barangay 23 where he operates a junk shop.

Newly-appointed Daraga town Police Chief Superintendent Joel Adan said that in addition to the keys, Azuran had various motorcycle spare parts.

Police believe a big-time trader is behind the rampant theft of motorcycles. The trader sells the engines to fishermen and these are dumped in Legazpi City.

Police said Azuran and Fuentes were charged with carnapping at the Daraga prosecutor’s office. Azuran also violated anti-fencing law.

A total of 37 motorcycles have been stolen in Legazpi alone from January to April 13 this year.
