PNP on full alert for grassroots vote


THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday placed its forces across the country on a full-alert status ahead of Monday’s village elections, which officials say is turning out to be more violent than the 2010 vote.

PNP Public Information chief Sr. Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac said the PNP nationwide full alert was raised early dawn Friday as part of security preparations for the village elections.

“The full-alert status was raised to the level of readiness of all police offices and units nationwide and to intensify election security efforts for the barangay elections on October 28,” Sindac told reporters in Camp Crame.

The PNP official said that the police high command has also issued general policy guidelines to all their units across the country during a nationwide accounting of all police personnel.

“All commanders were reminded to secure all camps and offices, vital installations, economic key points and places of convergences of people and at the same time perform election duties competently and objectively,” Sindac said.

The PNP official added that more additional police personnel were also deployed to Maguindanao and Sulu areas owing to some election related incidents have been monitored since the start of the election period.

“Under full-alert status, all leaves of absence were cancelled and all personnel were required to report to their duty stations and the highest alert condition will remain in effect until after election security operations had been completed,” Sindac said.

The PNP official added that a contingent of some 491 police officers and personnel, some still undergoing Field Training Exercise at the headquarters of the National Capital Regional Police Office were sent early Friday to Maguindanao.

The Southern Tagalog Police office also sent an additional 361 personnel for Maguindanao, while the Western Mindanao police office deployed some 300 police personnel for Sulu a known bailiwick of militants.

The PNP official added that some 144 personnel of from Region 10, while 204 personnel of PRO11, and 199 personnel of PRO12 were also deployed for Lanao del Sur.

Sindac added that personnel undergoing Public Safety Basic Recruit Course for immediate deployment in the ARMM where they will as Special Board of Election Tellers during the barangay polls.
