Sen. Grace Poe, the chairman of the Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs, led the destruction of P643 million worth of illegal drugs at Integrated Waste Management Inc. (IWMI) in Barangay Aguado, Trece Martires City, Cavite on Wednesday.
Destroyed were 240,694.10 grams of assorted pieces of drug evidence including methamphetamine hydrocloride or shabu, ketmine, ephedrine, cocaine, marijuana, ecstacy, zolpidem, poppy seeds and expired medicines.
Shabu represented 81.3 percent, or 546.05 million of the total amount of illegal drugs destroyed through thermal decompositon,” Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Arturo Cacdac Jr. said.
Poe said she was in favor of increasing the reward money for PDEA informers and the hazard pay of its agents. She also promised to lead a Senate investigation of drug cartels.
Cacdac said the burning of the illegal drugs was ordered by different regional trial courts to ensure that the drugs were not brought back to the streets. They were confiscated in PDEA, the National Bureau of Investigation and Calabarzon police operations in different provinces and in Metro Manila.
PDEA deputy director general for operation Assistant Secretary Abe Lermos, Cavite Provincial Police director Joselito Esquivel Jr., Trece Martires City police chief Gerry Protacio, Public Attorney’s Office chief Atty.Percifida Acosta and other local officials witnessed the burning of the confiscated drugs.
