AUTHORITIES don’t see the operation of the Mexican Sinaloa drug ring flourishing in the country because it doesn’t have a direct network in the Philippines that would carry it out, a lawmaker disclosed Monday.
Senator Grace Poe, chair of the Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs, said that based on the information given to her by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) the Mexican drug cartel doesn’t have a direct link or network in the country and it is still trying to establish one when authorities raided its storage facility at a ranch in Batangas province last December.
Poe said that it is possible that Gorge Torres, the one who rented the LPL Ranch in Barangay Inosloban owned by the family of Batangas vice governor Mark Leviste, has direct link to the drug ring.
“Apparently Torres is a U.S Citizen, who has roots in the United States, perhaps that’s when he encountered the group,” Poe told the members of the Senate media.
According to Poe what authorities should focus on right now is to prevent the notorious drug syndicate from establishing a network in the country, although she expressed belief that such possibility is now unlikely following the discovery of the group’s storage facility in Batangas.
The group also can’t rely on Torres to carry out its operation in the country because he himself is unknown or having no network in the Philippine illegal drug scene.
But Poe made it clear that authorities should thoroughly investigate Torres especially his background and his reason behind his decision to choose the LPL ranch as his storage facility.
PDEA Director General Undersecretary Arturo Cacdac Jr. earlier said that successful operation of PDEA and the Philippine National Police – Anti-Illegal-Drugs Special Operations Task Force (PNP-AIDSOTF) that led to the arrest of three suspected member members of the Mexican drug cartel and seizure of P420 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu has put an end to operation of the group. “We nipped it [cartel operation]on the bud. So we’re on top of the situation and we’re not concerned that the situation will worsen,” Cacdac said.
The Sinaloa drug cartel is considered by the United States (US) intelligence community as the most powerful drug trafficking organization in the world responsible for importing cocaine and heroin into the US.
The Christmas day raid also showed that apart from Chinese and West African drug syndicates, the Mexican Drug cartel has also found ways on how to smuggle illegal drugs into the country.
Poe on the other hand assured the PDEA that the senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs is more than willing to back its proposals aimed at further strengthening the agency. JEFFERSON ANTIPORDA
