DAGUPAN City, Pangasinan: Independent presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe on Friday revealed that the test conducted on the DNA samples taken from the relatives of the senator’s supposed biological parents turned out negative.
The DNA samples Poe were referring to were those taken from Lorena Rodriguez-De Chavez who claimed to be the senator’s aunt.
De Chavez approached Poe during the senator’s visit last year in Guimaras and volunteered to undergo DNA testing.
A resident of Buenavista town, Guimaras, De Chavez also claimed that her late sister, Victoria Rodriguez, and husband Paquito Montañez are the biological parents of Poe. She gave her permission to have their bodies exhumed to get DNA samples.
But doctors were not able to test the samples taken from the exhumed bodies because they were contaminated.
Samples were also taken Lorena’s relatives but they also did not match the senator’s DNA.
Poe said that the negative results of the DNA test do not affect her disqualification cases pending at the Supreme Court.
“We are not losing hope because our arguments before the Supreme Court are not based on DNA but on the rights of foundlings to have a status in this country,” Poe told reporters.
She added that even without a positive DNA match, they can win their case because there are laws that could help prove that she is a natural-born Filipino citizen.
