Seven people, including a police officer, were shot dead while another policeman was severely wounded in separate anti-illegal drug operations in Caloocan City early Friday morning.
Senior Supt. Johnson Almazan, Caloocan City police chief, said PO1 Romeo Mandapat was killed in action, while PO1 Bayani Oditor was injured.
Mandapat and Oditor were rushed to the hospital, but Mandapat was pronounced dead by physicians before 6:00 a.m.
The two were shot while in an anti-drug operation against a person identified as Jerson Matoran at Barangay
178 in northern Caloocan City before 4:00 a.m.
Matoran was killed after he allegedly engaged in a shootout with the police.
Almazan said Mandapat was the first Metro Manila policeman killed by a drug suspect since the anti-illegal drug campaign of the Duterte administration was launched on July 1.
Almazan stressed that the killing of Mandapat and the wounding of Oditor were concrete evidence that suspected drug dealers being hunted by police authorities were really putting up a fight against law enforcers.
Aside from Matoran, other suspected drug dealers who were killed in separate operations in the city early Friday were identified as Julian Dayta and a partner “Gary,” both from Barangay 20; and Daniel Kapampangan, Reagan Montaya and Ronald Montaya of Barangay 93.
Almazan said all suspects yielded shabu, drug paraphernalia, and guns.
