Police arrested six people and seized about $46-million worth of methamphetamine at a former US naval base, a police spokesman said.

The six were caught while loading travel bags and boxes at the port of Subic containing about 200 kilograms of the stimulant methamphetamine hydrochloride, said Chief Insp. Roque Merdegia.

Subic is a former US naval base that was converted into a freeport shortly after the Americans pulled out in 1992.

Merdegia put the street value of the seized drugs at P2 billion.

The raid was the result of five months of undercover operations, Merdegia said, although no other details were made available.

Foreign governments have tagged the Philippines a major transshipment point of illegal drugs in the region.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency has in the past acknowledged that drug lords have been known to finance the election campaigns of local officials in remote provinces.

  1. Just check out the estimated value of this drug haul. Even if this is an over blown value and estimate it to be half that, that is still a lot of money. Think about this, how much do you think the lowest ranking PDEA agent gets paid. I am really surprised that this bust even happened at all.The drug trafficking organization has more money than the operating budget of the PDEA, law enforcement do not stand a chance, agents all the way to the supervisors and directors will always be susceptible to corruption.
