Zamboanga City: AT least fourteen persons were arrested on Tuesday night by a joint Police and Coast Guard team for smuggling more than 1,000 sacks of sugar, a police official said Wednesday. Insp. Dahlan Tidal Sammudin, spokesman for the Western Mindanao Police Office, said in a report sent to Camp Crame that the arrested persons include eight crewmembers and six laborers. Their names are not readily available though. Initial investigation revealed that the suspects were onboard M/L Ylaiza Maye V when the patrolling joint team intercepted them in the vicinity of Barangays Sangli and Bolog. Not one of those arrested were reportedly able to provide any document related to the shipment. The seized cargo were given to the turned over to the Bureau of Customs while complaints are being readied against the suspects. Authorities are now conducting follow-up investigation of the said incident.
