Police collar suspect in UPLB student rape


CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna: POLICE have arrested a tricycle driver who was tagged as the main suspect in the rape of a 17-year-old student inside the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) campus last Tuesday night. The Laguna provincial police director,  Senior Supt. Florendo Saligao, identified the suspect as Jose Montecillo alias Joey who reportedly admitted raping the victim. Saligao said the victim and her family have lauded the police’s immediate action on the case but requested that their privacy be kept.

May I suggest to the Los Banos City Council, after a rape murder and recently rape happened in their area of responsibility due to unlighted street, that the city council pass an ordinance or even Congress pass a bill that will require all tricycles to install lights at 1) inside the passenger area 2) at the top of the driver’s and back riders area and 3) that the headlight of the tricycles are always open even in daytime and 4) that a LIGHT at the back of the tricycles where a big plate number of the tricycle, the association where the tricycle is registered member is painted, should be LIGHTED and very readable at a distance of 50 feet. These will not only deter crimes committed by trike drivers but also will prevent accidents.
