CAMP FLORENDO, La Union: The Police Regional Office will deploy on Monday rookie policemen to help secure the filing of certificatex of candidacy (COCs) at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Ilocos Region.
Chief Supt. Ericson Velasquez, Regional police director, said that aside from the rookie policemen, two cops will also be deployed in Comelec offices to counter any untoward incidents during the filing of COCs in the municipal and provincial levels.
It was learned that 246 of the 407 policemen will be deployed to Pangasinan, 58 each in La Union and Ilocos Sur, and 42 in Ilocos Norte.
Velasquez said they are still evaluating the situation in the four provinces if there are ‘areas of concern’ or hotspots for the upcoming elections.
He added that no incidents crime in the region related to private armed groups but they strengthened operations against any armed group that could be used by politicians during the election.
Velasquez also said that they already intensified operations against loose firearms and the patrolling of crime prone areas.
He said that 970 loose firearms were already accounted from various police operations from January to August 31, 2015.
The Comelec in Iloilo is also in the thick of preparations for the filing of certificates of candidacy from October 12 to 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Iloilo provincial election officer lawyer Elizabeth Doronila said on the said dates, election transactions such as application for validation and registration would be suspended to give priority to the filing of COCs.
As part of the paperless process, the Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance will be scanned, saved and sent to the central office.
Expected to file their COCs at the Comelec-Iloilo provincial office are those running for representatives in the five districts and candidates for governor, vice governor and board members.
