Police pacifying warring camps shot


MULANAY, Quezon: A rookie policeman was shot on Sunday while trying to pacify tension between supporters of two mayoralty candidates of this town.

The warring camps belonged to incumbent Mayor Joselito Ojeda of the ruling Liberal Party and challenger Den Maxino of the United Nationalist Alliance.

According to police reports, a blue Mitsubishi van belonging to the camp of Maximo with ten passengers was allegedly blocked and fired upon by suspects from a convoy of vehicles made up of a Mitsubishi Pajero and a dark gray Montero Sport, and a black Hyundai Tucson reportedly from Ojeda’s camp.

Mulanay acting police chief, Police Senior Inspector San Juan Felmar Dr Aquino, in a phone interview, said that PO1 Marlon Gonzaga Jr., who is assigned to the Police Public Safety Company (PPSC), chanced upon the incident but got trapped in the fire fight, resulting to his sustaining a gunshot wound on his left thigh. He was was brought to the Catanauan Hospital for treatment while the suspects fled.

Three of the suspects were identified as Antonio Padua, Ruben Subia and Pablo “Ranny” Casanada who were all onboard the Pajero.

“It was not yet clear whose camp fired first,” Aquino said. He added among the victims in the shooting include Ernesto Abenilla Aurin, 52; Sonny Rodil Rejano, 58; Rene Macasaet Awatin, 45; and Carlos Asia Fuerte, 57.

The incident is still being investigated by the police.
