• Police rescue woman held hostage in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Police arrested a man who held hostage a saleslady of a local shopping store, officials said on Sunday.

The hostage-taking happened on Saturday at the OK Department Store where Asari Pangalasan grabbed saleslady Maria Barbara dela Cruz and held a kitchen knife on her throat.

Policemen managed to disarm Pangalasan and safely rescued the woman.

Investigators said that Pangalasan, who lives in Sinunuc village, could be suffering from a mental problem and that he held the woman hostage in exchange for a blood supply.

It was not immediately known how Pangalasan managed to pass through security and walked through the third floor of the store where the woman was working.

Dela Cruz, apparently shaken by the incident, was trembling throughout the police investigation.

Store supervisors did not give any statement about the failed security in OK Department Store, one of the oldest in Zamboanga City.
