Four members of the Manila police were held hostage for two hours by the personnel of a fellow police officer who allegedly maintains an illegal gambling house in the city’s Tondo district.
Initial reports said District Director Rolando Asuncion on Friday morning at about 9:45 a.m. ordered four police officers led by Insp. Ariel del Rosario to look into the report that another police officer identified as SPO2 Rolando Simbulan was maintaining a gambling house.
Dressed in civilian clothes, del Rosario, accompanied by SPO1 James Poso, PO3 Adonis Aguila and PO2 Elmer Revita, rushed to the gambling house on Sevilla Extension and Concha Street.
Unable to locate Simbulan, they invited some personnel of the suspect’s staff to the police headquarters on United Nations Avenue in Ermita district for questioning.
When the police officers were about to exit the main door, however, the staff of the gambling house closed the door and locked up the policemen inside.
The four policemen were rescued only after agents of District Special Operation Unit used a bolt cutter to destroy the door lock.
Asuncion ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit to investigate Simbulan prior to filing appropriate criminal charges and imposing sanctions.
A source said Simbulan is a nephew of a certain Boy Abang, a maintainer of illegal race bookies and EZ2 bookies, among others, in all six districts of Manila.
