Dakar Rally organizers announced the demise of Polish motorcycle rider Michael Hernik during the third stage of the rally last week.
According to organizers, the body of the 39-year old rider was discovered at the 206-kilometer mark of the third stage between San Juan and Chilecito in Chile.
Hernik was a part of the KTM team participating in the 9,000-kilometer, two-week rally raid.
The Polish rider is the fifth participant to perish during the race since the event came to South America in 2009.
“The circumstances of his death have not yet been determined. He showed no sign of having been involve in an accident,” the organizers’ statement read.
