• Poor region has wealthy lawmakers


    CATBALOGAN CITY: Eastern Visayas is the third poorest region but it is represented by 14 multi-millionaires at the House of Representatives, according to their 2012 Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networths (SALNs).

    Rep. Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez of Leyte’s first district was the richest, while Rep. Mel Senen Sarmiento of Samar is the poorest, having assets worth P3 million.

    Romualdez had a net worth of P474.181 million.

    Rep. Lucy Marie Torres-Gomez is the second richest lawmaker in the region, with a net worth of P179.603 million. She is the 13th wealthiest in the House of Representatives.

    Rep. Roger Mercado, from Southern Leyte’s lone district, is the third richest in the region with a net worth of P46.7 million. He was followed by Rep. Sergio Apostol of the second district of Leyte, who declared a net worth of P45.1 million.

    Rep. Ben Evardone of Eastern Samar’s lone district meanwhile is worth P40.2 million, while Northern Samar first district Rep. Raul Daza listed a net worth of P37.8 million. Rep. Milagrosa Tan of Samar’s second district, with assets worth P32,4 million, is the seventh richest in the region.

    Neil Benedict Montejo and Florencio Noel of An Waray party-list are the 8th and 9th richest congressmen with a net worth of P17. 7 million and P15 million, respectively. Rep. Andres Salvacion of Leyte’s third district filed a net worth of P14.3 million, making him the region’s ninth richest lawmaker.

    The 10th richest is Rep. Emil Ong of Northern Samar’s third district, with assets worth P12.2 million. He is trailed by Rep. Jose Carlos Cari, Northern Samar’s political kingpin, whose net worth is P11.9 million.
