COTABATO CITY — Pope Francis on Saturday named Kidapawan Bishop Romulo dela Cruz as the new bishop of Zamboanga, Orlando Cardinal Quevedo said.
Quevedo made the announcement to priests in the archdiocese of Cotabato and diocese of Kidapawan Saturday night after he was informed by Papal Nuncio archbishop Giuseppe Pinto about Pope’s announcement in the Vatican.
Dela Cruz of the Diocesan Clergy of Cotabato (DCC) has been the bishop of Kidapawan since June 2008 after Pope Benedict named him to the Kidapawan diocese to replace then Bishop Romulo Valles, who was also named bishop of Zamboanga archdiocese.
It is expected that Pope Francis will also promote dela Cruz to archbishop to lead an archdiocese.
Dela Cruz was born on June 24, 1947 in Balasan, Iloilo.
He was ordained priest on December 8, 1972 in Kidapawan and became bishop on March 16, 1988.
Before he was named bishop of Kidapawan, dela Cruz was the bishop of Anrique after he served as co-adjutor bishop of Basilan.
Before he was named a bishop, dela Cruz served as parish priest in various parishes in the archdiocese of Cotabato and as rector of the Notre Dame Archdiocesan Seminary in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.
He further studied in Saint Francis Xavier Major Seminary in Davao, and at the Institute on Religious Formation in Saint Louis, Missouri in the US.
