SANTIAGO DE CUBA: Pope Francis on Monday praised the sacrifices of the Catholic Church in communist Cuba, with the island in the midst of a delicate process of resuming relations with the United States.

Francis, the first Latin American pope, made the comments to tens of thousands of fans and faithful in the sweltering eastern city of Holguin before arriving in the afternoon to rain in Santiago.
