SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union: Five members of an illegal drug group operating in this city’s Red District in Poro Point were arrested on Saturday by members of the City Police Force and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency after a one-day sting operation.
PSupt. Julius Suriben said the leader of the Bongolan Drug Group, Geotfrey Bongolan, of Santiago, Ilocos Sur, together with members Mariano Francisco Palabay and Bartolome Nisperos, Jr., both of Barangay Tanqui, here, fell in a police buy-bust operation in Barangay Madayegdeg.
Bongolan is the caretaker of the Grandma’s Bar in the Red District.
Earlier, Suriben’s men arrested Jerson Balanon, who was in the watchlist of the Barangay Cadaclan Anti-Drug Abuse Council, and a certain Angel Flores in a buy-bust operation in Barangay San Francisco.
Balanon, Mariano and Nisperos are tricycle drivers pushing drugs to customers, including their night passengers, while Flores, who was also alias Sofia, is allegedly a sex worker who was also pushing illegal drugs.
Sachets of shabu, drug paraphernalia, cash and motorcycles were confiscated from those arrested.
Suriben cited an intensified Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council and Lambat-Sibat operations as contributing factors in the arrest of one of the big-time illegal drugs groups in this city.
From January this year, the City Police Station under Suriben has netted 45 illegal drug personalities, including a former Tanod and a local conman posing as a law enforcement agent. Last year, a total of 117 drugs personalities, including a retired policeman, a barangay secretary and a tanod were arrested.
Suriben has cleared and declared 53 barangay as drug free.
