The Philippines bowed out of contention following a straight-set loss to Qatar, 17-25, 14-25, 21-25, in the 2014 Asian Men’s Volleyball Club Championship quarterfinals on Monday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Power Pinoys were relegated to the classification stage where they could only finish as high as fifth place. They will face Iraq on Tuesday.
Defending champion Matin Varamin-Iran and Kondensat Zhaikmunay-Kazakhstan also booked their semifinals berths after toppling respective quarterfinal foes in the tournament sanctioned by the Asian Volleyball Confederation.
Iran rallied past Taiwan, 24-26, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22, while Kazakhstan blanked Gas Al Janoob-Iraq, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20.
The Qataris battle the Kazakhs in the semifinals while the Iranians take on the winner between the Chinese and the Lebanese. The China-Lebanon match was scheduled on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea survived Mongolia, 19-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-10, and Japan swept Hong Kong, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22, in the classification phase.
