DARAGA, ALBAY: Three children and a pregnant teacher were killed while 33 others were wounded after a Don-Don Liner bus flipped over on its side in Daraga town on Sunday.
Daraga Police Chief Supt. Joel Adan identified the fatalities as siblings Ryan Percibal, 8, Georgina, 7, and Grace Ann Abrigo, 4, of Barangay Salvacion, Pilar, Sorsogon; and Princess Dichoso, 26, a public school teacher of Capoy, Sorsogon who was two months pregnant.
Investigation showed that the Legazpi-bound bus with body number 848 lost its balance and turn over on its left side after hitting a concrete wall while traversing a downward curve at around 9:20 a.m. in Barangay Kimantong.
Adan said two of the victims suffered fractured skulls and smashed up bodies that caused their instant deaths and the other two died while being treated at the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) here.
The police official said the bus which came from Sorsogon with at least 38 passengers lost control due to a transmission system problem that made it fell on its side while negotiating a sharp curve in Kimantong, an accident prone barangay in Daraga town.
He said the bus driver, Romel San Buenaventura, 43, of Sorsogon City, is now under police custody after being treated for injuries. The bus conductor, Alexander Mangapo, of Castilla, Sorsogon reportedly fled from the scene of accident.
Adam said they have yet to verify the names they got due to confusing data their investigators were getting as some victims could not yet give clear testimonies.
The fatalities were temporarily placed at the BRTTH morgue.
