Juno Sauler of De La Salle Green Archers and Boyet Fernandez of San Beda College Red Lions will both received the Coach of the Year award in the 2013 University Athletics Association of the Philippines-National Collegiate Athletic Association (UAAP-NCAA) Press Corps Collegiate Basketball Awards on December 15 at the Saisaki-Kamayan Edsa in Greenhills.
Sauler and Fernandez were chosen because of their successful campaign as head coaches during their rookie year.
Sauler took over less than three weeks before the UAAP season started, yet led the Green Archers to a second-round sweep of the eliminations before turning back Far Eastern University in the Final Four of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
On the other hand, Fernandez steered the Red Lions to their fourth straight championship crown and their 19th overall in the oldest collegiate league in the country by beating Letran Knights, 2-1.
Sauler and Fernandez will join the ranks of previous awardees Norman Black of Ateneo, Frankie Lim of San Beda and Pido Jarencio of the University of Santo Tomas.
“It has been a great learning experience, not just for me but for the whole team,” Sauler, who also works as a Ginebra assistant coach in the Philippine Basketball Association.
“What a run, what a ride,” Fernandez said as the NCAA wrapped up two weeks ago. “Again, this championship is for my players. Without them we won’t be able to win this four-peat.
